The Squib is a popular one-design racing keel sailboat, sailed across Ireland and the UK, with over 20 boats in LDYC. It is a perfect boat for the club because of it's fantastic versatility and suitability for the waters of Lough Derg. It sails like a dinghy (6m long) and Squib racing is famously competitive, close and exciting.

The Squib's fin keel makes it ideal for day cruising across Lough Derg being continuously able to make way in light winds and remaining upright in heavy winds.  A Squib sailor is rarely left standing on the shore not being able to sail. It is typically sailed by two people with both the helm and crew actively sharing the sailing of a main, jib and spinnaker sail.

  • Friday evening club racing, first gun at 18:15hrs.  The season starts following St Patrick's Day to the end of September.
  • Wednesday evening sailing, first gun at 19:00 hrs.  Runs every Wednesday from July to August, with an emphasis on introducing beginners to sailing & the fleet.
  • Sunday sailing is often a cruise to an interesting part of the lake and a picnic.
  • The highlight of the year is the LDYC Regatta in August and the Freshwater One-Design Keelboat Regatta in October (with National and UK boats in attendance).
  • A club SQUIB (382) is available to all club members .

We are a growing active fleet and all are welcome to join the fleet. Due to the growth of the fleet space for moorings are now limited, please contact Mooring Captain or Squib Class Captain for advice. If you don't have a Squib but wish to sail a Squib do not hesitate in contacting us. The following Squib sailors can be contacted if you require more information:

  • Anne Barrington, Squib Class Captain (086 8211878)
  • Fergal Keating (086 4045377)
If you wish to get regular updates, please ask to join the "LDYC Squibs" WhatsApp group.

The majority of boats within the fleet are Hunter built boats numbered from 158 to 724, with purchase prices between €500-€4,000 . We encourage the purchase of boats within this range of numbers & value. Boats should comply with the NSOA class rules. If you are interested in purchasing a Squib please contact a current Squib owner for advice and help.
