Goose Island Regatta

NOTICE OF RACE
GOOSE ISLAND REGATTA - July 8th 9th, 2023
Notice is hereby given of the 2023 Goose Island Regatta to be sailed under the burgee of the Lough Derg Yacht Club, Saturday and Sunday July 8th and 9th. Although a week later this year due to a Gosling Wedding in Tuscany we expect normal GIR service to resume
Featuring a celebration of M.V. Phoenix 150
Rules: will be used as guidelines
Registration: none. Show up, rig and be ready to sail at 1100hrs each day; also bring a sense of humour and 10 to enter (which can be done online)
Briefing: will be adjacent to the bar on Friday evening, pints in hand at half past; or maybe quarter to. No tricky questions please. And well brief again in the morning, which could be a different story
Racing: we shall again be re-purposing the islands and shoreline this year; expect to be sailing to distant places on the lake which you dont know exist. Classified.
Junior sailing games: although we wont have the resources to race the junior fleets to and from the secret locations, we do have a plan to arrange for some games on or in the water for those who can get towed or air-lifted out. This will be very much weather dependant. We would like to encourage SOD and Squib sailors to take juniors aboard as crew; youre more likely to win that way.
Sustenance: since the fleet are off-shore youll need to bring your own picnic and refreshments. Sun cream and bathers are recommended as sun will be out, temperatures will soar.
Courses: will be hailed off Barbarossa, perhaps drawn on a board, and then uploaded to the cloud. Or just follow us. We wont be creating an event WhatsApp group because youve no need to bring your phones with you; plus we couldnt be bothered
Eligibility: this event suits fully grown immature adults supervised by responsible children; we hope to see all the Derg SODs and Squibs out on the water. Its an opportunity to invite new sailors into your boat if youre short of crew. Shannons to sail 3-up, so please get organised.
Tides: will be falling (no rain expected), so the flow will be south towards Killaloe.
SOCIAL INSTRUCTIONS (aka SIs)
Rules: Competitors who infringe the rules or arent nice to their friends will be asked to pivot gracefully once ; this replaces doing turns
Protests will be heard over a virtual platform in October at The Wolf Regatta; those involved will be invited to hop on and hop off throughout that weekend until they say sorry and buy a round of drinks. What goes on in the room will stay in the room.
Regatta Dinner: Were going for a more formal dinner this year as part of our Celebration for the 150th year of M.V. Phoenix. Booking will be online and all are requested to book in early - we shall need final numbers by midday Thursday.
Pre-dinner drinks are planned Saturday evening for 1837hrs when we will toast Phoenix and sing a little
Entertainment: will be YOU
Expect an artistic challenge, recitations from Mother Gooses Nursery Rhymes, and other immature games later.
Prize Giving and Merit Awards
Assuming last years winners return them we shall be happy to present prizes on return Sunday afternoon. The choice of winners may reflect performance on and off the water. The committees decisions in this matter are final, unless you have a slush fund with which to corrupt them.
Non-sailing company
Cruisers, house boats and barges will be welcome to join us and raft up. SUPs, Kayaks, Canoes should also come in very useful.
